I am an avid reader. I will read anything fiction. When I first read Larry Baker's The Flamingo Rising, I was hooked for good. In fact, I had a hard time finding a book to follow it. The same can be said of his newest Love and Other Delusions. I enjoy a book whose characters and their actions are easy to follow, and Alice and Kathy and Danny are those types of characters. Larry Baker does it again with a wonderful story that keeps the reader entertained. I did not want to finish this book. I give it 5 stars and 2 thumbs up.
Alice is a liar. It's not a new thing for her. She has cheated on her husband, Pete, for decades. And now, at the end of her life, Alice has decided to try to make sense of her relationship with her long-time lover, Danny. Her journey to find the truth is long, circuitous and yes, delusional. Larry Baker's Love and Other Delusions, is a must-read for those who wish to explore the intriguing insanity that is love.
Hampie, that IS the point. Clearly you missed the whol premise of this book and I'm sad to hear that. His literary style with this book is absolutely genius.
Something about the stylistic rhythm reminds me of a song with the soft beginnings, pounding beats, rising, building and ebbing slightly, while floating before the dramatic ending...or is it a soft fade out? Somewhere along the way I forgot I was reading fiction and slipped into a voyeuristic delusion. I was spying on these peoples lives, becoming absorbed and realizing just how possible something, which seems implausible, can be acceptable. Each character is faulted for their shortcomings, but created in such a manner that is humanizing, rather than victimizing, and by doing so, makes it that more tragic. Or is it? The story will make you think about relationships, the complexity and what we get from each one we maintain over a life-time. What are these people to us and even though we share moments, our memories and value will greatly vary. Love and Other Delusions is an enlightening read and perfect for a summer escape.

Baker's story will resonate for anyone who has ever had a romance so powerful that it will never, ever be forgotten. Sometimes a deep affair of the heart, mind, and soul can blur one's grip on reality, or perhaps it is just indelibly imprinted in the psyche forever. Recommended for the sophisticated reader who enjoys captivating twists that will keep one contemplating long after the last page is finished!
I'm an avid reader and this book was a delusion...what was the point. It skips back and forth in time,and left me wondering what actually happened. Did her husband leave her, did he die, what happened to the lover??????? I kept hoping this would all be revealed in the last chapter, but it also made no sense. I can't believe anyone published this book. Mr. Baker is a very good writer,but he wasted his time with this plot.
